Manage your career, the Mario Kart™ way

Speaker's Biography

Hannes is a developer, a coach and a father of 3.

In .NET development, he has always had a passion for performance, databases, distributed systems and large scale applications. But most of all, he likes playing devil’s advocate in technical discussions by drawing the ‘it depends’ card.

As a coach, he is enthusiastic about knowledge sharing, personal growth and building careers. All this while keeping in mind that the pace needs to be sustainable.

In his free time, when he’s not building LEGO® castles with his kids, he likes to spend time building guitars, playing chess or poker, tasting whisky and doing all round geeky stuff.

You can occasionally find him on an afterparty stage at PubConf or with Dylan Beattie & the Linebreakers.

Talk Abstract

Surely, if you think of your career, Mario Kart™ is not where we are going to find valuable advice. After all, it taught us how to take shortcuts and how to stab our friends in the back. That doesn’t sound right. But we also learn how to get to the front of the race. So maybe there ARE lessons to be learned when it comes to being successful?

I am quite happy with where I am in my own career, but I’ve also had to overcome some obstacles to get here. And because I love sharing my experiences with others, I became a coach at Axxes. Because of that, I have been coaching other developers in building their careers for over a decade. Somewhere along the way, I’ve learned that helping others become successful is one of the main things that drives me, so I worked on getting better at it. Through my journey as a coach, I have touched on at least a hundred people’s careers.

Along the way, I have discovered that a guaranteed path to success doesn’t exist. But I have learned some techniques that are valuable, some insights that will help and some questions you should be asking yourself. I have also compiled a bunch of tips and tricks that will help you get more focus. By using them over and over, I’m seeing that they are helping the people I coach. And in this talk, I'll gladly share some of them with you.

I’m going to use Mario Kart™ as a guide through our journey. I’ll tell you about some of my experiences and I’ll share with you some of my tips and tricks. Hopefully, when you exit this session, you will have new inspiration for how to approach the next step in your own career.
